Our mission is to help mothers worldwide to breastfeed through mother-to-mother support, education, information and encouragement and to promote a better understanding of breastfeeding as an important element in the healthy development of the baby and mother. We are here to support you no matter what your breastfeeding goals are. We will support you in your breastfeeding relationship whether it's for three years or three days. La Leche League is an organization founded in 1956 by seven women who wanted to make breastfeeding easier and more rewarding for both mother and child. We offer information and encouragement – primarily through personal help – to those women who want to breastfeed their babies. La Leche League Leaders are experienced breastfeeding mothers who have completed an accreditation program and are familiar with breastfeeding management techniques as well as current research. We offer practical information and moral support to mothers through monthly meetings and phone help. La Leche League is here to support a loving relationship between you and your baby. The La Leche League basic manual, THE WOMANLY ART OF BREASTFEEDING, has sold more than two million copies and is available in seven languages, on audio tape and in Braille. Other LLLI publications are available in more than 25 languages. La Leche League is the world's largest resource for breastfeeding information. We publish 35 books and distribute more than three million publications annually. Over 200 books, pamphlets and tear-off sheets are available as well as a bimonthly periodical for breastfeeding parents and a quarterly journal for health care professionals. La Leche League has a Health Advisory Council of more than 40 professionals in the areas of pediatrics, obstetrics, allergy, nutrition, psychology, family practice and related fields. This Council is consulted on medical problems and evaluation of new research. Complementing the Health Advisory Council are doctors throughout the world who are members of the Medical Associates Program. The Center for Breastfeeding Information (CBI) houses a collection of articles from professional and lay journals and a database for these materials. It is one of the world's largest libraries of breastfeeding information. Assistance is provided to researchers through the Research Review Committee and the CBI staff. The LLLI Professional Advisory Board also includes a Legal Advisory Council who help LLL with legal questions and updates on legislation related to breastfeeding. A Management Advisory Council advises LLLI in business management functions. |
